A one-two with James Kates
An ever present in the water, the creative media and, unwillingly, forum threads.

Kates is the model surfer for the post-GFC world. He brings tight, good looking
surfing and video production skills that could give whale hunters some brand
cool. We exchanged questions and answers. Movement: We recently ran a promo piece with your
ex-sponsor Elit' and a few, mostly anonymous readers wrote some nasty things regarding your professional break up. Is there anything you would like
to say to clear the air? James Kates: Not really keen to get into it. It's
pretty pointless trash talk. I'm just real stoked with how things are going
with HB. Movement: What's the deal with the film Crazy, is that
something you're collaborating on? James Kates: My friend Jack Dobinson, a south coast
filmer, hit me up to help him edit it. Pretty much trying to steer clear of
anything typical of a boog flicks, even if it means causing epileptic fits. I
think the title sums it up: ohmygodsocrazyman.blogspot.com Movement: On the filming, you get as much mention for
that as you do for riding, are you purposefully cross-promoting yourself? Is it
just a back up plan? James Kates: A couple of years ago I was really into
filming/editing and never really thought I'd be a sponsored booger but still
frothed out never the less. I wasn't the most confident fella in the ocean. Ryan
Mattick was always backing my ability and as I was getting over filming he got
off the boog and behind the lens then I was like ‘fuck it I'll give it a dig
this year’. It's just how things worked out. I'm not frothing on self-promotion
but at the same time I love editing and if it means promoting someone’s brand while
helping me out then you beauty. Finishing… The sickest thing I've seen in the water lately was
... twenty-foot waves out at the
‘Stern The rider whose stocks have ridden most this year is
... Jase Finlay What makes me
happiest at the moment is .... riding cresters.
